It’s almost the opposite of Assassin’s Creed III proper, which spent six or seven hours on the kinds of introductory stuff that Liberation glosses over in five minutes.

While the player can fill in the gaps about her motivations and drive quite easily (and the game does reveal a bit of her backstory as it goes on), it kind of feels as if we’re missing the full first sequence to the game. After the game begins, we are almost instantly following the story of Aveline as a full Assassin. This is perhaps because we are thrown directly into the meat of the story. It almost feels more academic than visceral. While the game’s story premise is juicy and interesting, there is a strange distance from the proceedings. Generally, the game’s missions feel simple and slightly disconnected, where the strings of objectives never feel like they have been tested and refined quite as much as similar missions in a mainline Assassin’s Creed game. Although the lady persona is perhaps the most interesting from a story perspective, the sequences where you are forced use it are often slow and less open. However, not all of the guises are created equally. These three modes mean you attack missions slightly differently than you would in an average Assassin’s Creed game, but in a way that feels appropriate to the world and the story, and it gives the game’s theme of mutable racial and class identity a gameplay component. The lady guise limits Aveline’s mobility (she can’t climb things in her big poofy dress), but in this persona, she rarely attracts much attention from guards. The slave guise has all of the mobility of the Assassin persona, despite being more vulnerable in combat, while making it easier to blend into the background.

However, the Vita feels as if it’s not quite up to the task of rendering these detailed, open environments - specifically character models have fewer polygons and the game runs sluggishly, rarely getting up to 30 frames per second. While this is a standard feature in the main Assassin’s Creed games, seeing it on the small screen feels impressive. The first time you get to an overlook viewpoint to “sync” with the city, you get a breathtaking panorama. Indeed, the game is at its best when it is leveraging this expansive, very Assassin’s Creed-like environment. New Orleans and its surroundings aren’t as large as the huge world of Assassin’s Creed III, but they are almost as big as Constantinople in Assassin’s Creed Revelations. The game drops players into a brand-new city, New Orleans, which hasn’t been recycled or re-purposed from other entries in the series.
